DeviceSQL Quick Start Suite

Q:  What’s in the DeviceSQL Quick Start Suite?
A:  The DeviceSQL Quick Start Suite includes everything you need to learn and use DeviceSQL on Windows-based systems. It includes full-function versions of the DeviceSQL Compiler, DeviceSQL Prototyper and DeviceSQL Service Libraries together with an interactive, self-paced tutorial and an MP3 player demo application to help you get started. It also includes the MinGW (GNU) compiler so you can re-compile and run the sample applications or build applications of your own. Full product documentation is also included. Users can gain access to technical support and other resources by registering with the Encirq DevZone web site.

Q:  What Can I Do with the DeviceSQL Quick Start Suite?
A:  With the Quick Start Suite you can quickly learn about DeviceSQL as well as best practices for managing device data. The suite includes an MP3 player demo application (with source code) so you can modify and re-build the data management portions of the MP3 player application. You can also use the DeviceSQL framework to go off and explore building entirely new applications of your own. The primary restriction is that applications cannot be deployed for commercial purposes. If you want to deploy DeviceSQL-enabled applications for commercial purposes, please contact Encirq.

Q:  What’s in the Interactive Tutorial?
A:  The interactive, browser-based tutorial features an introduction to the DeviceSQL framework and a primer on device data management. The primer covers data-centric development, entity-relationship modeling, relational, tablular and streams-based data models, normalization and other topics. The illustrate some of these principles the tutorial includes a sample application and an MP3 player demo application. Source code for the data management portions of the MP3 demo application is included.

Q:  Do I Need to Register My Copy of the DeviceSQL Quick Start Suite?
A: You don’t have to register if you just want to browse parts of the tutorial and sample application. However, registration is required if want to access DeviceSQL framework components that allow you to build applications with the DeviceSQL framework. Registration also enables you to access the MP3 player demo application and technical support resources in DevZone.

Q:  What is the Encirq DevZone?
A:  The DevZone is Encirq’s technical support site for DeviceSQL users and Encirq partners and is the primary technical support resource for users of the DeviceSQL Quick Start Suite. DevZone provides community-based discussion forums, FAQs, additional technical materials as well as the latest version of the DeviceSQL Quick Start Suite. To access DevZone and register your copy of the Quick Start Suite, click here.

Q:  How Can I Obtain Technical Support?
A:  The primary technical support resource for Quick Start Suite users is Encirq’s DevZone. In DevZone you’ll find discussion forums, technical FAQs and additional resources to help you. To access DevZone, you must register to set up a User name and password. Click here to register.

Q:  Why Does the DeviceSQL Quick Start Suite Include the MinGW Compiler?
A: MinGW is a subset of the GNU-based MinGW development environment—an isolated, self-contained environment for building applications for the Windows platform. The Quick Start Suite MP3 demo application is built with the MinGW compiler and it is included for your convenience. DeviceSQL can also work with virtually any other C/++ compiler or IDE. More information on MinGW can be found at http://www.mingw.org.

Q:  How is the DeviceSQL Quick Start Suite Different than a “Standard” Version of DeviceSQL?
A:  The DeviceSQL Quick Start Suite is available as a free download (or CD) and provides access to full-function versions of the basic tools and components included in a standard version of the DeviceSQL framework for Windows. It differs from a standard commercial version of DeviceSQL in that it is governed by a non-commercial use license and includes an interactive tutorial and demo applications. Another difference is that the standard commercial version of DeviceSQL includes two additional components: the graphical DeviceSQL Builder tool and DeviceSQL Starter Applications.

Q:  How Can I upgrade the Quick Start Suite to a Full Commercial Version?
A:  To upgrade to the full commercial use version of the DeviceSQL framework, contact Encirq.

Q:  What is DeviceSQL Builder?
A:  DeviceSQL Builder is a graphical tool that enables you to design, generate and validate data management components and solutions without the need for traditional programming methods. It provides a graphical interface that enables you to easily construct a "data model" that will define, describe, manage and document how data is used in a system created with the DeviceSQL framework. From this data model, DeviceSQL Builder automates the generation of DeviceSQL code, API code, sample application code, test cases, IDE project files and documentation, saving months of development time. DeviceSQL Builder is included with purchases of the standard DeviceSQL Development Environment and is available to Quick Start Suite users on request.

Q:  Can I Modify the Code for the MP3 Player Demo Application?
A:  Yes. Source code for the data management portions of the MP3 Player demo application are included with the DeviceSQL Quick Start Suite. If you’ve already registered and installed the DeviceSQL framework, you can modify and re-build the data management component into a DLL (MP3TrackInfo.dll) which is used by the MP3 player UI (MP3App.exe). In this release, source code for the UI component of the MP3 player is not included.

Q:  Can I Try DeviceSQL on a Development Host or Target Platform other than Windows?
A:  Yes. The DeviceSQL Development Environment is also available for Linux and Solaris hosts and DeviceSQL Platform Environments can support virtually any target OS and CPU combination. If you would like to try DeviceSQL in a non-Windows environment, please contact Encirq.
